Achieving Your Goals

How to Improve Your Life with Self-Hypnosis

The art of self-hypnosis often gets dismissed as being “new age.” However, just like nearly everything in life, if you truly believe in yourself and the practice, it can prove to be very helpful.

What Is Self-Hypnosis?

Self-hypnosis is a form of hypnosis that you can perform on yourself. It certainly comes in handy because you won’t need anyone else to help you receive the many benefits of hypnosis. Self-hypnosis is now a large part of modern hypnotherapy.

How Can Self-Hypnosis Help?

The uses for self-hypnosis are nearly endless. If you have a problem that you wish to resolve, chances are, self-hypnosis can help you find your solution. Self-hypnosis can obliterate the obstacles that keep you from achieving your goals.

Here are some of the challenges that self-hypnosis can help you solve:

* Smoking and other addictions
* Personal development
* Stress management
* Problem solving
* Pain management, including chronic pain or the pain of childbirth or surgery

When you practice self-hypnosis, you can get yourself through pretty much any of life’s challenges!

Practicing Self-Hypnosis

The image of hypnosis that you have in mind right now is probably the image of a person holding a pocket watch counting backwards while saying, “you’re getting sleeeeepy.” Sorry, but that’s only in the cartoons!

Hypnosis isn’t about tricking people or forcing them to fall asleep, it’s simply a state of deep relaxation that can be achieved, even through self-hypnosis.

The truth is, self-hypnosis is similar to meditation. Meditation, however, has more of a focus on finding your breath and staying in the moment, while self-hypnosis takes things further in order for you to solve one specific issue.

A self-hypnosis session will typically last from 15 minutes to 1 hour. It’s flexible so you can find a session length that works well for you.

Imagery In Self-Hypnosis

One way that self-hypnosis differs from meditation is in its use of imagery. If your goal is relaxation, you can imagine yourself in a place that you find relaxing. It could be an actual place that you’ve been to, or a place in your mind that you’ve always dreamed of.

Using Affirmations

Self-hypnosis often makes use of affirmations. Affirmations are short positive statements, like mantras, that you repeat to yourself several times a day. The most important characteristics of a good affirmation are the following:

* Spoken in first person
* Spoken in the present tense
* Spoken with a positive tone

For example, if you were using affirmations for childbirth, you might say, “I am having a calm birth,” even if you haven’t entered active labor yet. The purpose is to train your mind to think of the situation in a positive light, which helps to build confidence and comfort.

Affirmations are more powerful than you think, which is why they’re useful in self-hypnosis.

Scripts and CDs

Using the help of scripts and CDs, anyone can enjoy the benefits of self-hypnosis. They’re popular choices because they’ll allow you to gain the benefits of music, affirmations, and imagery without having to plan those steps out yourself. They guide you through the entire session.

When you’re ready to try self-hypnosis, remember that there aren’t any strict rules. As long as you can gain some time to yourself and close your eyes and relax, you can explore the world of self-hypnosis.

Keys to Success: Perseverance

Achieving your goals is hardly ever an easy journey. If it were easy, we’d all already be there. One of the keys to success is, without a doubt, perseverance. With improved perseverance you’ll have that extra push from within to try, try again.

Humans have the tendency to want to control everything. Since there are always situations that can’t be controlled, suffering occurs. Unfortunately, this suffering can’t be escaped. Your goal should never be to avoid mistakes at all costs and seek control. Your goal should be to strengthen your perseverance by effectively dealing with the situation when things go awry.

Keep these tips in mind as you strengthen your perseverance:

Never Give Up. When you have an ultimate goal, you owe it to yourself to completely follow through. There are going to be plenty of bumps in the road. Don’t let any of these bumps bring you down. Always be seeking new ways of approaching problems.

Seek Out the Positive. When things have become overwhelmingly negative for you, seek out positive things in your life. You might want to surround yourself with loved ones or watch positive movies. You definitely want to seek out situations that’ll promote your optimism and enthusiasm.

Take Action and Responsibility. Do whatever you can to inspire yourself to take bold actions toward your goal. Fight the urge to procrastinate or settle for less. Thinking about your goals is simply not enough; you need to start somewhere in order to get yourself there. You can’t wait for some sign or higher power to get you to where you want to go, you must be willing to take action!

Get Help When Needed. Be wise enough to know when a situation warrants help from others. You don’t need to take every single thing into your own hands. Instead, choose to follow advice from the people you trust or the experts in your chosen field. Flat out ask them how they’ve maintained the drive to keep going.

Know Your True Self. Knowing yourself and having organized thoughts can improve your perseverance. When you know where you’re going and the steps you need to take to get there, that’s half the battle. That’s why you need to take the proper amount of time for self-reflection. Know the true ins and outs of what you want and exactly why you want it.

Stop Bad Habits. Do everything in your power to put a stop to bad habits. If there are certain behaviors you’ve identified that are keeping you from achieving your goals, you need to get rid of them. This could be simply negative thinking or you might be fighting procrastination. When you concentrate on each bad habit individually, you’ll be better able to deal with the problems that might exist.

Concentrate on Stress Management. Stress management and your level of perseverance are definitely related. When stress overwhelms you, it clouds your current thinking and brings on negativity. Your perseverance can’t flourish in a negative environment. You must first conquer any problems you have with stress so you’ll be better able to reach your goals.

Step By Step

Perseverance is likely already a part of your life. You just need to bring it out and strengthen its existence. It all boils down to the power of thought. When you think you can, you will. When you think you can’t, you won’t.

4 Ways to Build Your Willpower

Usually when we hear the word “willpower,” we relate it to losing weight or quitting smoking. Willpower is extremely helpful when trying to break those bad habits, but it can also be beneficial in other areas of your life as well.

It’s important to realize that we’re not born with willpower; it’s something we must nurture and build in ourselves. Once we strengthen our willpower, it’ll provide us an upper hand in achieving our goals. Why? Because we’ll develop an unshakeable focus and intensity in purpose!

So how do you go about building your willpower?

Here are four strategies to get you headed in the right direction:

  1. 1. Commitment. You must be committed to reaching your goals. If you’re not completely committed to what you want to accomplish, there’s no way you’ll be able to develop any willpower.

  • To be successful in achieving your goals, you mustn’t harbor any second thoughts, excuses, or doubts. Be honest with yourself and know that this is something you truly want to see through until the end.
  • Remember, just having the desire will not guarantee accomplishment. You can desire something without firm commitment, so be sure to distinguish between the two and take the appropriate actions.
  1. 2. Call on your inner strength. Building your willpower takes perseverance. This is a time to call on your inner strength – that extra push you need to get through the difficult times.

  • You’ve made a commitment to take a journey to strengthen your willpower and accomplish your most challenging goals – this is great! The truth is, you’ll have many days of success, but there will also be days that aren’t as triumphant. It’s on those not-so-good days that you can call on your inner strength to get you back on track.
  • Everyone has an inner strength and most of us have used it on more than one occasion. Trust in it and it will get you through the rough spots!

  1. 3. Ask for support. Building your willpower to achieve a goal is a large undertaking. Sometimes it can be overwhelming. This is why it’s so imperative that we have support during this time.

  • Entrust a friend, spouse, or parent with what you’re trying to accomplish. That way, when you hit a stumbling block, you have someone you trust to get you back on the right track.

  • Your support system will help you through the hard times and celebrate your successes with you.
  1. 4. Be consistent. If you have the willpower to stop smoking for one week, that’s wonderful and should be celebrated. But the only way you’re going to build your willpower is to do whatever it takes to avoid cigarettes today, tomorrow, and forever. Then soon enough you’ll be celebrating two weeks, two months, two years, and then forever!

  • This strategy applies to any goal that you’re seriously trying to accomplish. You must be willing to keep up the positive behavior all day, every day, no exceptions, and no excuses.
  • Things can only improve as you continue to build your willpower. Keep pushing yourself forward!

Willpower is a tricky concept. We all want to develop it to break a bad habit or reach a particular goal, yet in order to do so, we must be willing to go the extra mile and fully commit ourselves to our success.

If you are committed, you should be commended! Be sure to use these tips to help you build your willpower and celebrate your successes each and every day.

Becoming Your Own Number 1 Fan

If you’re looking to lead a happier life, believing in yourself is an absolute necessity. If you don’t believe in yourself, how can you expect others to believe in you?

You may have gone through some rough times in your life making it difficult to be the happy person you want to be. Maybe you even suffer from a lack of self-confidence because of past conflicts and pains. No matter what you’ve been through, you can choose to overcome these obstacles.

It’s time to be your own Number 1 fan and there’s no better time to start than right now!

  1. 1. Gain more confidence in yourself by facing your fears.

  • Fear of failure may have caused you to ignore your dreams, desires or goals. Don’t let fear stop you from getting what you want and achieving your goals. If Thomas Edison had been afraid of failure, we wouldn’t have the luxury of indoor lighting today. He never gave up trying to find the right way to make a light bulb and he experienced over 10,000 ways of how not to make a light bulb. Just because you don’t reach your goals or dreams the first time, don’t give up. Keep trying until you succeed.

  • Fear of being alone may stop you from going away to school or moving to a new city where you can pursue your dreams. Realize that you will make new friends and that you’re current friends will always be there. Now with the Internet, staying in touch with your friends and family is easier and more convenient than ever.

  • Once you begin facing your fears, you’ll discover that what you feared may not be such a big deal after all. But, you’ll never know until you start.
  1. 2. Self-talk can also determine whether you believe in yourself or not.

  • Do you often say negative things like, “I’m an idiot,” or “That was a dumb thing to do,” or “I’m ugly?” How you perceive yourself comes out in what you say. However, what you say to yourself can also change how you see yourself.

  • Start speaking positively to yourself, about yourself. When you’re getting ready for the day, while looking in the mirror, point out positive characteristics about yourself and say them out loud. Phrases such as:
    • “I am an attractive person.”
    • “I am a good parent.”
    • “I am a hard worker.”
    • “I love myself.”
    • “I like how I look in these clothes.”
    • “I am brilliant.”
    • Even if you don’t believe it, say it! You’ll soon realize these things really are true. You can also post positive quotes or scriptures where you would see them several times a day to keep your spirits high.
  1. 3. Insecurity can be a source of disbelief. Learning to be more secure in certain areas of your life will help you believe in yourself more, plus others will begin to believe in you as well.
  1. 4. There may be certain areas in your life that you feel you need to work on, so work on them!

  • Are you bad at financial management? Take a class to help you learn how to budget so you can be in control of your money, instead of your money controlling you.
  • Are you a slow reader? Take a speed-reading class or get a tutor to help you build speed.
  • Do you find it challenging to speak in public? Take a public speaking course or become an intern for an organization where you must speak in public.
  • Is your weight stopping you from believing yourself? First of all, remember that today’s society has a skewed view of beauty. Don’t allow the media to determine your worth! However, if your weight is at an unhealthy level, learn how to eat healthy and get regular exercise to take some weight off.

No matter what’s stopping you from believing in yourself, there’s a way to overcome it. You’ll first need to figure out what’s causing your self-doubt. Is it fear, insecurity, mental attitudes, or something else? Only then can you face the obstacle and overcome it.

Creating a Winning Attitude

Your attitude can make or break you. It’s virtually indisputable that your attitude determines how far you’ll go in life and a positive mental outlook can help you achieve optimal success.

Having a positive mental attitude helps you cope with challenges. When you’re put to the test, you’re more likely to find your inner strengths to overcome adversity, and that strength just might be your winning attitude. Whether or not you have the tools, skills, knowledge, or resources, your attitude can get you through tough times and come out on top.

On the other hand, an attitude filled with negative overtones makes everything much harder. You can’t win when you go into the contest prepared to lose! If you expect to do well, your attitude will create positive, winning thoughts that help you succeed.

Cause and Effect

It’s important to realize that for every effect in our lives, there’s a specific cause. Through positive thoughts, we can control these causes and change effects or outcomes.

  • In order to change your future for the better, you must first alter your thoughts in the present.

For every positive seed you plant, your thoughts will grow and reward you with a positive harvest. Negative seeds have the opposite effect. They’ll grow, but result in a spoiled and fruitless crop. You can’t plant negative seeds in your mind and expect positive results. It just doesn’t work that way.

A vivid and defining difference between people who are successful and those who aren’t is the way they think. Successful people visualize their goals and take action to make them happen.

Unsuccessful people dwell on the negative, spend their time and energy complaining, and worry about things that are unimportant. This negativity wastes time and energy that could be harnessed toward achieving your goals.

Practice Makes Perfect

If you hone your positive thinking skills and develop the mental attitudes of a winner, you’ll be able to overcome challenges without giving up. No matter how discouraging things may get or how intently others may try to dissuade you, with your winning attitude, you will be unstoppable!

A positive outlook enables you to focus on your goals with a tunnel vision that eliminates negative distractions and keeps you on a chartered course to success.
